The biggest event on the Mersea Island calendar is always the West Mersea Town Regatta! The date for the Regatta is of course is of course completely reliant on an afternoon tide to ensure enough water for the afternoon’s events to take place.
The past few years have seen some miserable weather for Regatta day so everyone has their fingers crossed for glorious sunshine. Either way, everyone involved always has a great time from dusk til Dawn.
The greasy pole event is one of the many highlights of Regatta day, many contestents try their balancing skills to see if they can reach the end of the pole to grab the flag. Most end up in the water and the event is best viewed from the water.
Attractions on the day include stalls selling gifts, Regatta T shirts and hoodies and some amazing street food as well as live music, entertainers and not forgetting, Stock’s Fair opposite the Victory.
Fireworks are at dusk on the day of the Regatta, listen out for those familiar BOOMS from the maroon, signalling your 5 minute warning until show time. Please give generously to the buckets as this is the only funding for the fireworks display.
After the final firework has lit up the sky, dodge the crowds heading home to put their sleepy kids to bed and enjoy the atmosphere at one of the waterfront bars late into the night.
